David Z. Frankel, M.D. grew up in Margate City, where he attended Margate City Schools and Atlantic City High School. He was a lifeguard with the Margate City Beach Patrol for 2 years and with the Atlantic City Beach Patrol for 6 years. Dr. Frankel attended Princeton University, where he majored in Chemical Engineering and rowed on the lightweight crew team. Following medical school at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Dr. Frankel completed an Internship in General Surgery at the University of Illinois at Chicago, a Residency in Family Medicine at Duke University, and a Fellowship in Primary Care Sports Medicine at UCLA. Following completion of his graduate medical education, Dr. Frankel worked at 3B Orthopaedics in Philadelphia, at the University of Washington Hall Health Center in Seattle, and at NextCare Urgent Care in Tucson. While living in Tucson, Dr. Frankel was training for Ironman Arizona, which he completed in November 2012. Dr. Frankel continues to train and enjoys racing in local triathlons and running races.
Dr. Frankel has served as a team physician for UCLA Intercollegiate Athletics, the Philadelphia Kixx (NISL), Ballard High School (Seattle, WA), Neumann Goretti High School (Philadelphia, PA), Beverly Hills High School (Beverly Hills, CA) and Charles E. Jordan High School (Durham, NC). Dr. Frankel has provided coverage for Atlantic City High School (Atlantic City, NJ), the University of Washington Ice Hockey team, the Amica Seattle Marathon, the Rock 'n' Roll Seattle Marathon, US Women's Soccer v. Ireland, the Surf City USA Marathon, the Park City Mountain Resort clinic, the NCAA Men's Tennis Championships Regional, Ironman 70.3 Oceanside, the Pacific Shoreline Marathon, the US Open Championship at Pinehurst #2, and the Duke Ice Hockey Canes Cup. Dr. Frankel has performed pre-participation physicals with the Nick of Time Foundation to screen for sudden cardiac death, the University of Washington Crew team, UCLA Intercollegiate Athletics, Beverly Hills High School, the LA Galaxy and Chivas USA (MLS), Pepperdine University Intercollegiate Athletics, Duke University Intercollegiate Athletics, North Carolina Central University Intercollegiate Athletics, and Durham Public Schools.
Dr. Frankel is a published author in peer-reviewed journals and textbooks on several Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic topics.
Dr. Frankel is a member of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) and the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP).
Dr. Frankel has attended the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) Annual Meeting every year since 2004 in order to stay up-to-date on the latest knowledge in Sports Medicine and Non-Operative Orthopaedics. In addition, Dr. Frankel has attended several Musculoskeletal Ultrasound courses in order to become an expert in the use of ultrasound for diagnosis and treatment in Sports Medicine and Non-Operative Orthopaedics.
Dr. Frankel is excited to be back home in Margate City and looks forward to caring for elite athletes, weekend warriors, and active patients of all ages. As a life-long athlete, Dr. Frankel enjoys relating to his patients and strives to return them to their activities as soon as possible by spending the necessary time to discuss the patient's concerns thoroughly, performing a comprehensive examination, ordering appropriate tests when needed, providing an accurate diagnosis, and developing an effective treatment plan in coordination with the patient.
